Bambooroo are offering ‘hands-on’ workshops as an instructional forum for participants to learn and exercise practical techniques and theoretical concepts in the fields of bamboo design, architecture, and engineering,

BAMBOO TOUR

  • Plantation visit ; Bamboo ID & clump management
  • Bamboo treatment, and bamboo storage.
  • Basket Weaving- Weave your own traditional Thai Bamboo Basket.

GETTING THERE

Chiang Mai is a popular tourist destination with many airlines providing cheap flights to the Thai cultural capital. For those who arrive from international ports to Bangkok, you can easily purchase domestic flights to Chiang Mai with Bangkok Air at the ticket counter for around 2300-3000 Thai baht ($75-100USD). Bangkok – Chiang Mai is an hour flight.

WORKSHOP COST: Active Students 600USD. Professional 650USD.

Participants from abroad who find it difficult to make an international payment can confirm your reservation by emailing your flight itinerary to admin@bambooroo.com. Alternatively a deposit of 50% can be made into the bank account specified within the booking form. At registration on the first afternoon you will be required to settle an outstanding balance.

A maximum of 25 participants, can join the workshop event.

DAILY ROUTINE

Each morning commences with a slide show seminar by the Australian landscape architect and bamboo designer, Mark Emery. First morning focuses on the history of bamboo architecture drawing on precedents from Europe, Indonesia, Thailand, Colombia, Mexico and Hawaii. With a global context of bamboo building we can begin to analyse the modern era of bamboo architecture.

Following seminars include an overview of Bambooroo Projects, looking at all key aspects from design conceptualization and construction process to reveal methodology applied in tropical bamboo architecture. Bamboo building components are explored in form and expression in domestic details. After seminars we will have time for questions, discussion, and a general ideas exchange and debate.

WORKSHOP GROUPS :

Workshop commences with personal introductions by participants giving a brief personal biography after which you will be assigned into groups . The workshop proceeding will begin with an introduction and overview of the workshop tasks . For safety awareness participants are given a brief outline of do’s and don’ts before the constructions begin.

GETTING HANDS-ON

You will be given the opportunity to get “hands-on” in your workshop team under the supervision of the master-craftsman who will guide you through the construction exercise. After each session your team will be rotated to experience all of the group exercises. To be hands-on is not an obligation, however there will be the opportunity to observe the process, make notes and discuss with master-builders and team members.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Accommodation – Twin sharing

Accommodation will be provided at “The First Residence” nearby the Bambooroo Facility where the workshops will take place. Twin singles or double beds can accommodate two people.

Breakfast – Lunch – Dinner

Breakfast will be at the First Residence Hotel. Lunch and Dinner are buffet vegetarian and mixed Thai fusion dishes accompanied by fruit and salad. This culinary exploration is provided by Daow’s kitchen and will take place at the Bambooroo Facility. After meals one may take your time to relax, get to know one another as we talk shop- “bamboo!“ We have a transfer service that will enable you to wash of an evening before meals are served. Nearby the hotel only a short distance from your rooms are convenience services and one may experience a traditional Thai market early in the morning or 7 eleven after hours.

Lunch (1 ½ hours)

At lunch you will enjoy the basic but authentic Thai cuisine renowned the world over. Help your self to as much as one can absorb with options for vegetarian or vegan meals. Please don’t forget to select this option for vegetarian and vegans on the workshop questionnaire.

Tea breaks (2x 20mins)

A hardworking participant builds a healthy appetite and requires continual injections of coffee, tea, drinks and snacks to get through the day. Tea/coffee breaks are also an opportunity for everyone to mix within the groups, discuss ideas and see how things are going.

Bamboo Plantation Visit

A visit to natural bamboo groves, cultural back yard resource grown and farmed bamboo examples. The purpose of the trip is to get into the microclimate where bamboo are growing environment and getting familiar with different varieties will help us start to identify the plethora of endemic and introduced bamboo species to northern Thailand. Responsible clump management will be demonstrated to ensure that all participants are aware of the requirements of tropical bamboos. Our duty is to ensure the education of bamboo cutters, farmers, and industry practitioners for ‘best practice’ to maximise health and productivity of the bamboo resource.

Bamboo Basket Weaving

Learn the ancient art of bamboo weaving with our bamboo basket masters. Start with a green pole and develop technique to extract the bamboo slivers and weave them into your own basket to take home. This is your chance to perfect basic bamboo basketry and learn a great life skill endlessly applicable. Most importantly you get hands on experience with the bamboo material in the small scale, good for material intimacy.

12:00: Lunch – Daow’s Delicious Electric Lunch followed by Yoga Classes for Beginners or hang out in a hammock and talk shop with teammates.
13.30: Workshop group work starts.
18.00: Hotel Transfer Shower time @ First Residence Hotel.
19.00: Dinner Transfer to Daows restaurant- Thai fusion buffet.
21.00: Dinner Transfer to The First Residence Hotel.

DAY 3- Friday 4th of December

DAY 4- Saturday 5th of December

10.00-12.00: Plantation Visit
The plantation tour is a chance to see Bambooroo perform clump management on various small and large diameter Asian Topical clumping Bamboos. Learn their local names, Botanic/Latin name of species and phenotype to familiarise yourself with the Anatomical features and correctly identify bamboo.
12:00: Lunch time- Daow’s magic bamboo lunch box.
14:30: Village Transfer – meandering journey through the rice paddies and bamboo groves on route to the master bamboo weavers workshop.
13:30: Bamboo Basket Weaving – Learn from the village bamboo master how to convert a round pole into baskets developed in Northern Thailand’s bamboo weaving culture.
16:00: Bamboo Treatment Seminar @ Bambooroo Facility.
18:00: Finishing Photos: chance to wrap up the proceedings.
19:00: Dinner: BBQ Buffet, Music, Karaoke, etc. @ Bambooroo Facility.
23.00: Hotel Transfer to The First Residence Hotel.

DAY 5- Sunday 6th of December

05.00-12:00 : Checkout. Transfer to Chiang Mai Downtown hotel or Airport
