Mark Emery, “History of Bamboo Bridges”

Australian Landscape Architect from UNSW will present the history of bamboo bridge building from indigenous societies to contemporary commercial and public applications for bamboo bridges. Within this presentation we will explore the various architectural concepts that can be applied to bamboo bridge building.

PROGRAM

Wednesday 7th of December

8.00: Registration

Personal introduction from each participant

9.30- 12.00: Plantation Visit
– The wild bamboo grove- understanding the natural growth habit.
– The plantation- clump management how to control conditions for efficient growth.
– Species familiarisation.
– Harvesting the culm- Listening to the culm and “Spotting the spots”- tips for mature bamboo selection and sustainable harvesting.

12.00 Midday: Lunch at Eco-Park Papae
– Cow soy chicken / beef / tofu. Satay sticks- sticky rice. Stir-fried mixed vegetables , Salad, Iced tea. Tropical fruits.

13.30: Factory Introduction.
– Familiarisation of the anatomy of the bamboo culm, introduction of bamboo species of varying characteristics.
– Selection criteria for bamboo use, maturity, density, size, straightness, and colour.
– Preservation technique with salts of boron using the “horizontal submersion” for large scale and “Vertical Diffusion” for small cottage industry, and domestic use.
– Exploring the various drying and storage techniques.

14.30- 15.30 –Workshop groups : Getting familiar with the long round pole
– Temporary and woven structures- Handling tips and group co-operation exercise.

15.30-17.00: Workshop groups : Material Selection and Site preparation.

Thursday 8th of December

08.00: Breakfast @ “Green lake”
09.00: Daily Introduction
The function of the introduction is to discuss questions from the day before and to give the participants an idea of what will happen during the day. With this information the participants can decide if they wish to rotate groups or stay with your original team.
10.00: Workshop groups : Material Selection and Site preparation.

Group 1. Long Element prefab – Bamboo selection. Cartesian plotting point to make a ‘jig’ on the ground.
Group 2. A – frame prefab – A frame scaffolding
Group 3. Footing preparation- excavation,
Group 4. bamboo splits preparation.
Begin weaving classes. We will be weaving large panels 9m x 5m panels.

12.00 Midday: Lunch at Suan
A selection of thai dishes meat and vegetarian will be offered followed by traditional thai dessert.

13.30- 16.30 : Workshop groups
Group 1. Long Element prefab.- Pairing Bamboos.
Group 2. A – frame prefab Sandwhiched King Truss
Group 3. Footing preparation –steel, formwo
rk, mixing concrete.
Group 4. Bamboo splits preparation.
16.30 – 17.00: Daily Wrap-up
The main point of the wrap up is to gather all the groups and to discuss what happened during the day. As many people are focussed on their groups construction exercise, it is important for everybody to know what happened in the other groups so that they understand all the exercises.

Friday 9th of December

8.00 Breakfast @ “Green lake”

9am: Daily Introduction
Today being the final day we will be at full speed with the workshop constructions. Everybody will be clearly briefed as we must move into high gear to complete and install the prefabricated constructions.

10.00-12.00: Workshop groups
Group 1. Long Element prefab.- Positioning beams
Group 2. A – frame Installation.
Group 3. Footing Preparations- Final surface preparation.
Group 4. “Chicken net”- ‘Surface active’ architecture or ‘Basket’ architecture- Install chicken net

12.00 Midday: Lunch at Tiger Kingdom

• A selection of thai dishes meat and vegetarian will be offered followed by traditional thai dessert.
13.30- 17.30 –Workshop groups
Group 1. Long Element prefab. Installation of bamboo Poles
Group 2. Long Element prefab. Installation of bamboo Poles
Group 3. Footing Preparations- Final surface preparation.
Group 4. Woven bamboo deck.

17.30: Group Photo.
Each participant shall receive a DVD with memories of the past days, and also a Certificate for completion of the workshop.

18.30: Dinner @ “Green lake”

21.30: Leaving Party.
The final Hurrah with small snacks and drinks available for those wishing to celebrate your fine achievements with one another. The final night accommodation is included in your package so we recommend that we finish together on a high note and celebrate into the night.
